The Kills
The Rickshaw Stop, San Francisco, CA
February 14, 2008
I went through not a small amount of headache to get to Popscene on Thursday night, with my train coming to a halt in an isolated section of San Mateo after a fatal accident on the tracks in Burlingame stopped commuter traffic in both directions. After leaving the train station and walking a ways to some semblance of civilization, i tried to call for a taxi but that proved fruitless. I wound up hoofing it all the way to El Camino and having a late dinner at Heidi's Pies before Veronica finished her Valentine's Day nail appointment in the city and motored down the 101 to fetch me. We arrived at Popscene, relocated to the Rickshaw Stop while 330 Ritch is being remodeled, around 10:30pm. I've previously remarked on the sheer scenesterism of the Rickshaw, home of the über-pretentious Club ID, and tonight was no different. There was a line for the bathroom, not due to the obvious cause of drunken people with full bladders, but for those looking to snag a stall to snort various controlled substances. My friend Michael, in town from his home of the last three years in Vietnam, was due to join us but was felled by a bout of jet lag, so our party consisted of V, myself, and Jenz. The Kills came on around 11pm, launching into their characteristic grungy, bluesy rock driven by the guitar of Jamie Hince and the sexy croon of Alison Mosshart. It's a sound that has impressed me twice now live, but has yet to coerce me into investigating their records to any significant depth. They've got a new one due in a few months, so perhaps that will change matters. Veronica was more interested in seeing whether Hince's girlfriend, anorexic model and apparent rock groupie Kate Moss, would be in attendance. Popscene kingpin Aaron Axelson told us she was supposed to be there, but we didn't catch a sight of her. Veronica went to the bathroom ... for the obvious reason, mind you ... and missed the closer to the set, the old standard and rocking rant "Fried My Little Brains". V and co. got their dance on for the remainder of the evening, while i drank a couple of Red Stripes.
