Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Bimbo's 365 Club, San Francisco, CA
March 1, 2006
V and i first saw the Yeah Yeah Yeahs opening for Sleater-Kinney in Boston, where their raw energy stole the stage from the seemingly past-it indie rock goddesses. Not long after their debut album Fever to Tell was released, we managed to get tickets to their 100 person Live 105 studio session, where they played four excellent acoustic numbers. Last Wednesday we got our third live dose of Karen O and company, in support of their forthcoming sophomore album Show Your Bones. The show reflected as much, showcasing their new effort with (to my ear) only "Art Star" and "Maps" coming from earlier recordings. I quite like the new songs, although they are more laid-back and reflective than the energy of "Date with the Night" or "Bang". The "Maps"-descendent (in tone, if not in style) "Cheated Hearts" was particularly excellent. As such, i found the show to be a great introduction to the next chapter of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Karen was her usual wild self, sporting a billowing shiny gold top. Nick achieved his usual encompassing wall of sound with his lone guitar, although in their current configuration sometimes Folk Implosion and Alaska guitarist Imaad Wasif occasionally provides backup. We ran into Greg, Nate, Elliot, Arne, et al. after the show (the old "Roo Crew", as i call them), and apparently my opinion that their new sound is less immediate is in the minority. Whatever the consensus, i quite enjoyed the show and am looking forward to continued evolutions.
