i love my boyfriend josh, he's sitting over there 4:48pm 5/6/2002

I saw Belle & Sebastian for the first time on Saturday night, at the Orpheum in Boston. For a band that composes such beautifully somber and sobering music, finding out that they are quite talkative and jovial during their live performances is quite a shock. Shock in a good way, of course. I can't remember a performer chatting so much since I saw Billy Bragg way back when. The highlight of the evening was undoubtedly when the band decided to do a Pixies cover for the Boston crowd, and invited a girl on stage to sing "Gigantic". Although she got on stage by assuring Stuart she knew the words, once planted in front of the mic her level of competence had sunk to "I know most of the words". By the end it was apparent that she knew the chorus and that was it. She was a good sport, filling in with quips like "I love my boyfriend Josh, he's sitting over there".

Despite being what I would say is a big fan of the band, I must shamefully admit that I am thoroughly versed in only their first two albums, Tigermilk and If You're Feeling Sinister. So 90% of the show was foreign to me. Usually that results in me not enjoying the show, but in this case I was able to just sit back and appreciate a great band at work. It was amazing that whenever you heard a sound, you could find someone on stage playing the corresponding instrument. No taped samples or loops ... how often do you see music performed 100% live?
